Other name: 3-methyl-1H-indole

Skatole or 3-methylindole is an organic compound belonging to the indole family.
It occurs naturally in the feces of mammals and birds and is the primary contributor to fecal odor. Its name derives from the Greek root skato-, meaning 'feces'.

Skatole is a natural compound that is often added to perfumes to create depth. In very low concentrations, skatole is described as smelling like orange blossoms and jasmine and is added to perfumes and colognes. In higher concentrations, however, it lives up to its name.
